Understanding AS/NZS 3000 Electrical Standards for High-Density Computing Loads

In Australia, commercial electrical installations are strictly governed by AS/NZS 3000 (the Australian/New Zealand Wiring Rules). Deploying a cluster of mining machines represents a continuous, non-linear load running at 100% capacity 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This differs radically from standard residential or commercial workshop duty cycles.
Under AS/NZS 3008 (selection of cables), when multiple conductors are grouped tightly within enclosed conduits or cable trays, derating factors must be applied to account for mutual thermal heating. A 16mm² XLPE copper cable rated for 85A in free air may only safely carry 58A when bundled alongside four other live circuits in an unventilated riser.
Furthermore, switched-mode power supplies (SMPS) utilized in modern ASIC miners generate 3rd, 9th, and 15th triplen harmonics. In a three-phase 415V delta-wye distribution system, triplen harmonics do not cancel out in the neutral conductor; instead, they sum constructively. Without careful engineering, the neutral conductor can experience currents exceeding the phase conductors, presenting severe fire risks.
